2010 United Cooperative Appeal

United Cooperative Appeal
The United Co-op Appeal (UCA) is an annual workplace giving program that is managed by the Cooperative Development Foundation.
Help Build the Cooperative Economy

There are many ways to help build the cooperative economy, from shopping at co-ops, to investing in co-op development loan funds, which provide critical capital to co-ops, to becoming a co-op member. One of the best and easiest ways for cooperators to practice the sixth principle, cooperation among cooperatives, is to give to the United Cooperative Appeal. Every year since 1992 the Cooperative Development Foundation has administered the UCA, a workplace giving program that collects contributions for cooperative economic development enterprises throughout the U.S. and the world.

Recipient Organizations are Leaders in the Field

The UCA's recipient organizations are an outstanding group with a long track record of developing successful cooperatives. These organizations believe in, promote and support cooperatives as a means of empowering people to solve problems and improve their lives. Donors can choose to give to one, several, or all of the recipient organizations. CDI is proud to be among our colleagues and partners in the list below.

Focus on Infrastructure: CDI Supports the Data Commons

CDI will use the funds gathered from the UCA to support the pre-development of the Data Commons Project (DCP). The Data Commons Cooperative (DCC) will be formed as a multi-stakeholder (worker and consumer) cooperative providing information services to the cooperative community through an online, open-source, interactive database. Born out of the needs and interests of several local, regional and national cooperatives, cooperative development organizations, and cooperative activists, the DCC is being formed for the purposes of: fostering knowledge sharing among economic initiatives rooted in their communities, such as cooperatives, credit unions, employee-owned companies, land trusts, and community-supported agriculture; developing the technology and processes needed to reduce the cost of knowledge sharing; applying these tools to create a "data commons" that will be a key resource for those seeking to understand and participate in the rooted economy; and making that commons available online both on the web (as users prefer) and via a revision control system (key to long-term evolution and survival of the data).

It's Efficient and Effective

If your workplace has signed up as a host organization, you can ask to have your donations contributed automatically from your paycheck. Contributions go straight to recipients thanks to a donation from the Nationwide Foundation that covers administrative costs. Alternatively, you can donate online to the UCA directly or send a check to made out to United Co-op Appeal/CDF to the attention of Terence Buen, Program Director, 2011 Crystal Drive, Suite 800, Arlington, VA 22202.
